The lantern festival was one of the most awaited nights in .
Every year, small glowing lights filled the paths, the trees and the central square. Each lantern was carefully prepared, each one placed with intention, and when the evening arrived, the whole town shone like a quiet sky full of stars.
This year, however, something was not right.
Ohm noticed it first.
“That lantern…” he said quietly, pointing toward the edge of the square.
Ori followed his gaze. “It’s moving,” she said.
But lanterns were not supposed to move.
Ciar stepped closer, narrowing his eyes. The light inside the lantern flickered unevenly, brighter, then softer, as if it were breathing.
“That’s not wind,” he said.
Cari tilted her head. “Then what is it?”
The four friends approached slowly.
The lantern stood slightly apart from the others, near an old wooden post that had not been used in years. Its frame looked normal, but the light inside moved in small, irregular pulses.
Ori examined the base carefully.
“Look at this,” she said. “This lantern wasn’t placed like the others. It’s attached differently.”
Ohm touched the side of the post. “There’s a hollow space here.”
Ciar leaned closer and listened.
“There’s something inside.”
For a moment, none of them spoke.
The festival was about to begin. Lanterns were already being lit across the town. Voices filled the air. But here, at the edge of the square, everything felt strangely quiet.
“We should open it,” said Ohm.
“Carefully,” added Ori.
Together, they loosened the small wooden panel behind the post.
Inside, they found a narrow chamber… and a tiny mechanical device.
Cari blinked. “A mechanism?”
The device was connected to the lantern above. Small reflective pieces moved as the light passed through them, creating the illusion that the lantern itself was alive.
Ciar smiled slowly. “It’s not broken. It’s designed.”
Ohm nodded. “Someone wanted this lantern to be different.”
Ori examined the structure. “But why place it apart from the others?”
Then Cari noticed something carved inside the wooden panel.
A small symbol: a circle with lines around it, like a glowing sun.
“We’ve seen this before,” she said.
Ohm looked toward the center of the square, where the largest lantern would soon be lit.
“Maybe this is not just decoration,” he said. “Maybe it’s a signal.”
They followed the alignment of the lanterns across the square.
From one position, the strange lantern pointed directly toward the main platform.
Ciar stepped back and looked at the whole scene.
“It’s guiding the view,” he said. “Not lighting the path.”
Ori smiled. “Then it’s meant to be seen from a specific place.”
They moved to the platform and turned back toward the square.
From there, the lanterns formed a perfect pattern. The strange lantern was the only one that completed the shape.
Cari’s eyes widened.
“It’s part of the design,” she said.
At that moment, the first bell of the festival rang.
All the lanterns lit at once.
The pattern became clear: a glowing symbol of unity, visible only from the center of the town.
The moving light was not a mistake.
It was the final piece.
Ohm looked at his friends and smiled.
“Sometimes,” he said, “the mystery is not about fixing something.”
“It’s about understanding it,” said Ori.
Ciar nodded. “And seeing it from the right place.”
Cari closed the panel gently.
That night, as the lanterns shone over , the four friends stood quietly in the center of the square.
Now they knew that even the smallest detail could change the way everything was seen.
